A certain select group of well-meaning progressives decided to take the opportunity of Mr. Ahmadinejad’s visit to host a gala event for him at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in NYC. The invitation list was supposed to be confidential and kept tightly-guarded, but word leaked out, alas, and copies of the invite have spread across the internet:

[…]

Yes, I agree; this is appalling. But it gets smellier and smellier the more you look into it. Here’s the bare outline of the facts:

The Grand Hyatt in NYC is owned by the Hyatt Corporation, which is owned by H Group Holding.

The Hyatt Corporation is a private company owned by the Pritzker family. Penny Pritzker is one of four major heirs.

Penny Pritzker is Barack Obama’s chair for his campaign finance committee, sometimes also referred to as treasurer for Obama’s campaign finance committee.

So Obama’s campaign finance committee’s chairwoman is hosting Ahmadinejad on Thursday at the Hyatt.

Campaign Launched for Yemeni Journalist al-Khaiwani, Please Join

Sign here please. Its a letter campaign to the Yemeni government, US, UK, UN and EU for my friend Yemeni journalist al-Khaiwani who may be sentenced to death in two weeks for insulting the president. We can’t have that. No. So please sign here. In Yemen, the campaign is co-sponsored by Member of Parliament Ahmed Saif Hasid who gave Jawa an interview about conditions in Yemen prisons and two prominent female journalists/activists.

Also the UK journalists organization, Article 19, has endorsed the campaign.

Some Al-Khaiwani quotes:

October 27, 2005 Yemen Times article by al-Khawiani “Stop Attacking the American Journalist” :

“Being an independent political article, Jane is an effective voice having its strong reverberation in different parts of the world. After their failure to attract Novak to their side, the Yemeni authorities turned to terrorize journalists, harm the reputation of Novak and prevent the circulation of her articles in the country in order not to let the Yemeni journalists know the westerners who back them.”

From my article after his 2007 arrest (but before his kidnapping):

Dec 2004, he wrote me from jail, “Democracy and freedom are not granted by a leader or a regime, it is a world wide human achievement of all the free people on earth.” and “I believe in democracy, freedom, equality and rights and am willing to suffer for their sake simply because I do not wish my children to suffer dictatorship and I will strive to provide them a better future.”May 2004, “We will continue our fight against corrupt crooks at the power center who are annoyed by the reports that have touched their interests,” he told the Yemen Times.

December 2006, he wrote to the United Nations, “The State hunts us, abuses our rights, and restrict our freedom of expressions. We were subjected to abduction, forcible disappearance, and illegal and unconstitutional arrests. We are deprived of our livelihood sources because we criticize corruption and the military regime that has been grasping power for 28 years.” (The United Nations failed to respond.)

In February 2007, al-Khaiwani was forcibly brought to court related to a published article. “I wished the court showed a similar zest in Anisah Al-Shuabi’s case or doing justice to Raash villagers,” he noted, referring to women raped by police and an entire village displaced at the whim of a sheik.

February 2007, he said his website Al-Shoura was blocked, “because we are criticizing corruption, the prejudices of rights and freedoms, and our continuing need for political and cultural reforms and good governance.”

December 2007: Al-Khiwani told MENASSAT.COM, “I am paying the price for believing the government and its claims about pursuing rise of democracy. After they broke into my house and terrified my family and kidnapped me in public, in front of the Al-Nida newspaper, I have this feeling that the authorities have decided to spill my blood.”

Article 19’s report on Yemen, “Freedom of Expression in Peril”, contains this from Al-Khaiwani, “They mobilize religion, laws and even the tribe against us. We, on the other hand, only own our dreams. They even want to rob us of this.”

Tehran police chief caught with 6 prostitutes

Reza Zarei, who was in charge of ‘moralizing the city,’ forced to step down after being caught nude in local brothel

Published: 03.12.08, 08:59 / Israel News

Tehran’s police chief, Reza Zarei, has been arrested after he was found nude in a local brothel with six naked prostitutes, the Farda news website reported Wednesday.

Zarei stepped down from his post following the raid, the report said. According to another popular Iranian website, Gooya, the order to raid the brothel was given directly by Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, chief of the judicial authorities. It is alleged that in the past six months, hundreds of young people have been arrested in Iran for not respecting the Islamic code of behavior.

Over the past year Zarei was in charge of enforcing the Islamic dress code on Iranian women with the purpose of “moralizing of the city.”

Rumors of the brothel incident had been spreading in Iran for the past two weeks, and last week Zarei was replaced after four years as chief of police in Tehran. The arrest was not reported by any of Iran’s official news agencies. Farda News, which broke the story, is a website said to be close to the mayor of Tehran and former chief of the police forces, Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf and is considered reliable.

Revolutionary Guard, police forces clash with Iranian citizens in Tehran after they try to arrest a young woman for supposedly breaking Islamic dress code rules

Published: 02.25.08, 09:53 / Israel News

Clashes erupted between Iranian citizens, Revolutionary Guard forces and the Iranian Chastity Police in Tehran on Saturday, after police forces attempted to arrest a young woman they deemed “inappropriately dressed”.

The young woman reportedly resisted arrest, at which point the security forces attempted to forcibly get her in their car and began beating her.

The sight of the bloody-faced woman prompted a bystander to come to her aid, but he was beaten by the security forces as well. Dozens of Iranians who were present at the scene began rioting and setting dumpsters on fire.

The event was captured on numerous cell-phone cameras and quickly found its way to YouTube. The video clearly shows the crowds calling against the Iranian regime, shouting out “police state” and “no more Islamic regime.” The crowed reportedly called out against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as well.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Chastity Police’s efforts to enforce the Islamic dress code on Iranian women have been even more rigorous lately, as thousands of women have been detained, questioned and arrested for failing to uphold the dress code.

Ten people were arrested during Saturday’s clash.

Now for a bit of good news.

Iran Tightens the Noose On Apostasy

Iran Mulls the Death Penalty for Apostates—Perhaps with Worldwide Jurisdiction

Life for so-called apostates in Iran has never been easy, but it could become literally impossible if Iran passes a new draft penal code. For the first time in its history, Iran is considering the death penalty for apostates. In the past, authorities have executed apostates. But punishment by death has never before been set down in law.

The text of the draft penal code uses the word Hadd, which explicitly sets death as a fixed punishment that cannot be changed, reduced or annulled. The rest of the code is little better. By using ill-defined terms, other provisions also open the door to abuse Iran’s already beleaguered religious and ethnic minorities.

Article 225-1 states “Any Muslim who clearly announces that he/she has left Islam and declares blasphemy is an Apostate.” Article 225-2 adds that “Serious and earnest intention is the condition for certainty in apostasy.” So an accused person could claim that he made his statement reluctantly, or ignorantly, or while drunk, or through the slip of a tongue, and he would not be considered an apostate.
The penal code also identifies two types of apostates: innate (Fetri) and parental (Melli). An innate apostate has at least one parent who was a Muslim at conception, who declares himself a Muslim after maturity, then later leaves Islam. Maturity occurs at puberty, usually around 12 or 13. By contrast, both the parents of a parental apostate were non-Muslims at his conception. A parental apostate becomes a Muslim at maturity, then “later leaves Islam and returns to blasphemy.”

The code adds another condition for the parental apostate: anyone who has “at least one Muslim parent at the time of conception but after the age of maturity, without pretending to be a Muslim, chooses blasphemy is considered a Parental Apostate.”

To dispel any confusion over the required punishment for apostasy, the draft code says outright that “punishment for an Innate Apostate is death.” However, parental apostates do receive a slender reprieve: After sentencing, they have three days to recant their beliefs. If not, they will be executed according to their sentence.

Interestingly, the punishment for women is lighter than that for men. Punishment for a woman, whether innate or parental, is life imprisonment with hardship “exercised on her.” If a woman recants, she will be freed immediately. In a side note, the code’s authors said religious laws would determine “the condition of hardship.”

The code would also further erode the rights of minorities such as Bahá’ís or Christians by labeling them apostates. “False prophets”—a term undefined in the code—are to be sentenced to death. Any Muslim who “invents a heresy” or a sect contrary to Islam is also an apostate.

Also worrying for minorities is Article 133-3, which declares that anyone who uses a minor to commit a crime will be punished. As past experience shows, parents of Bahá’í or Christian youth who share their teachings with children other than their own could find this article applies to them. Also, two or more people who get together to commit a felony constitute a group or band. This reference can be used for any organized action by a group of people, including any activity carried out by groups the government considers dangerous, such as Bahá’ís, Christians, or Azeris.

The code’s authors go even further, extending its jurisdiction beyond Iran’s borders to those acting “against the government, the independence and the internal and external security of the country.” The law does not define the term “security.” This means that groups around the world that Iran’s regime consider dangerous could be liable for actions they take outside the country.

Iran already has an abysmal record when it comes to oppressing religious minorities and political dissidents. The current draft penal code only provides more scope to abuse the fundamental rights of Iranians. For anyone who dares question the regime’s religious ideology, there could soon be no room to argue—only death.

U.S. says Iran election results are ‘cooked’

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States, at loggerheads with Tehran over its nuclear program, cast strong doubt on the fairness of Iran’s parliamentary elections on Friday and said any outcome of the poll would be “cooked.”“In essence the results are cooked. They are cooked in the sense that the Iranian people were not able to vote for a full range of people,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said of the poll.Iranians voted on Friday in an election likely to keep parliament in the control of conservatives after unelected state bodies barred many reformist foes of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from the race.

“They are given the choice of choosing between one supporter of the regime or another supporter of the regime,” McCormack told reporters. “They were not given the opportunity … to vote for somebody who might have had different ideas.”

ahmadinejad-podium.jpgAhmadinejad has shrugged off criticism about the election.

After the polls closed, McCormack released a statement saying Iran had “once again failed to meet international standards on the conduct of democratic elections.”

He urged Iran’s leaders to stop what he said was interference in future elections, including the 2009 presidential poll and increase transparency by allowing independent monitors.

“The Iranian regime again used ideological grounds to disqualify candidates for parliament, imposed severe restrictions on the ability of journalists and media outlets to cover the elections, limited the ability of candidates to campaign and refused to allow independent election monitors access to polling stations on election day,” McCormack said.
